Spanish in the world: a language that just keeps growing!

Did you know that almost 600 million people speak Spanish? Yes, really! That’s like the entire population of Europe, the Americas, and a good handful more all speaking Spanish. Not bad for a language we sometimes think is only useful to say “hola” and “una cerveza, por favor?”, right?

📊 The importance of Spanish in the world

Spanish is the second most spoken native language in the world, only behind Mandarin Chinese (now that’s a big audience!). And if we count everyone who speaks it as a second or third language, Spanish becomes the fourth most spoken language on the planet.

🌍 Spanish in Europe and the U.S.

Did you know that 46 million people in Europe can get by in Spanish? And in the United States, there are over 62 million people of Hispanic origin. In fact, it’s expected that by 2060, the U.S. will be the second country with the most Spanish speakers, right after Mexico. Who would’ve thought?

Also, Spanish is the second most studied foreign language in European higher education. So if you’re learning Spanish, you’re definitely not alone!
